Death adds to Guard losses; Force mourns sixth death in Afghanistan, investigates cause.(Main)

A New York National Guardsman died on the Fourth of July in Afghanistan from a nonhostile incident, the Department of Defense announced Monday, making him the sixth New York Guard member to die there in less than two weeks.

1st Lt. Daniel Farkas, 42, of Washington Park, Brooklyn, died at Camp Phoenix in Kabul, the New York National Guard said. The incident, which is under investigation, did not involve enemy fire, National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Eric Durr said. He declined to elaborate.
