NSW: Woman found dead in car crash on M5

A fatal accident on the M5 in Sydney's south-west this morning has claimed the life
of a woman and closed southbound traffic.

A police spokesman says they were called to the scene .. at Moorebank .. about one
kilometre south of the M5 toll booths .. around 3.15am (AEDT) by another motorist .. who
discovered a badly damaged sedan across two lanes of the motorway.

They discovered a woman suffering head injuries a short distance away .. but ambulance
officers were unable to resuscitate her.

Her death brings the state's holiday road toll to eight and the national toll to 23.

Police are appealing for witnesses .. or anyone who was travelling along the M5 between
2.45 and 3.15 this morning .. to contact Crime Stoppers.

A crime scene has been established and inquiries into the incident are underway by
officers from the Liverpool Local Area Command and the Metropolitan Crash Investigation
Unit.

The spokesman says all lanes are blocked southbound on the M5 between Henry Lawson
Drive and Heathcote Road while inquiries are carried out.

Diversions are in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
